N.Y. has the ways and means...
Another amazing show from 1971
The Dead play Colleges, small venues-East Coast.
A point of info: college university system in N.Y.
goes by the acronym S.U.N.Y.
This particular campus is
State University New York at CORTLAND.
SUNY-CORTLAND.
Also well known for their Apples!
You might think this time period is somewhat mellow as they tend to focus more song by song rather than bringing the express train but remember the last time the Grateful Dead played the North East college circuit they were playing half-acoustic shows and many numbers from Workingman's and American Beauty probably the definition of mellowness.
I really dig this bare bones style of just playing the songs. If there is a down side it has to be that Phil does not get as much elbow room as the band focuses on all the ins and outs of the tunes from
(for lack of a better term) the BERTHA era.
Sugar Magnolia sounds so good here.
I love that Wha-Wha sound.
The song just shines!
this is the 2nd-SECOND THAT EMOTION I have heard from this tour. Just mind blowing to hear this outside of JGB. best part of this is checking out the harmonies--Bob, Pig, maybe Phil?
Short, tight concise Jam to close it before final vocals.
This is a pretty nice board because when they get to the line 'N.Y. got the ways and means' not even a hint of crowd reaction.
Wow they almost hit a meltdown
at the climax of TRUCKIN'
Hard to Handle- i never noticed how heavy is Phil's bass on this tune. Really he is leading the charge here.
Something happens in LOSER, to mess with the vibe , but they recover. Not sure just what- had to be right on stage because no crowd noise here during songs.
Jerry sounds so good here!!!
P.I.T.B-pretty late in the set here. still bare bones under 5 minutes. I would have liked to be there the moment they figured out how nicely Playing>Uncle John's fit together.
Roundx2 is really hyped. It has that 50's feel to it.
Jerry could really play that Chuck Berry riff.
Bobby's voice! Even the primal scream!!!
It is funny Jerry had mentioned something at set break about 'just a few minutes for break because of time'
But here comes a 24 minute Good Lovin'
Which leads me to believe they dosed, got seduced, got dancin' whoever was the official keeper of the houselights and power supply.
Bill the Drummer is so bad ass. Deep funky Rhythm- man almost sounds like they could hit Samson and Delilah from here.
UJB-encore ANOTHER DEADHEAD FOR LIFE.
